John S. Steenrod, 87, of Nelsonville, passed away Saturday, November 15, 2003, at Doctor?s Hospital of Nelsonville.
He was born November 29, 1915, in Nelsonville, son of the late Amos and Ellen Bartoe Steenrod. He is preceded in death by his wife Helen E. Cook Steenrod.
John was a retired letter carrier from the United States Postal Service working in Nelsonville, he was also a member of the the Elder Presbyterian Church, member of the church farm committee and a past master of the Philodorian Masonic Lodge #157.
John is survived by four sons, Robert Kathryn Steenrod of Athens, Thomas Rebecca Steenrod of Nelsonville, Richard Jamie Steenrod of Nelsonville and Dale Debby Steenrod of Nelsonville; fourteen grandchildren, Bruce Steenrod, David Steenrod, Doug Steenrod, Jamie Davis, Thomas Steenrod Jr., Sarah Tome`, Gregory Steenrod, Scott Steenrod, Tracie Venrick, James Steenrod, Douglas Tolliver, Derek Steenrod, Damen Steenrod and Danielle Steenrod; twenty-four great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor White of Nelsonville and Rachel Woodard of Nelsonville.
John is preceded in death by a great grandson Patrik Davis, three brothers Floyd Steenrod, Orval Steenrod and Randall ?Grubby? Steenrod and four sisters Hazel Keating, Lucille Williams, Georgia Evans and Lula McKinney.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Harold McConnell, officiating. Interment will in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. where there will be a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m.
Graveside services will be performed by the Combined Colorgaurd Unit.
