Rex E. Maiden

Rex E. Maiden, 68, of Nelsonville died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus in the presence of his loving family.

Born May 30, 1935 in Louisville KY, he was the son of the late Elmer and Ada Durham Maiden. He was also preceded in death by his wife Nancy Smith Maiden.

Mr. Maiden was a 1953 graduate of Middleport High School and Ohio University where he earned both his bachelors and master?s degrees in civil engineering and was inducted as a member of the distinguished graduates of Ohio University in 1999. He was a professional engineer and CEO of Maiden and Jenkins Construction Co., Nelsonville.

He was a former Athens County Engineer and filed petitions for the 2004 Democratic race for Athens County Engineer. He was on the Advisory Board of Ohio University, Russ College of Engineering, a member and treasurer of the Sunday Creek Coal Company?s Board of Directors, on the Board of Directors of Peoples Bank and the Hocking College Foundation, and formerly a board member of the Heinzerling Foundation, Columbus. Mr. Maiden was an avid supporter of the Parade of the Hills. He was a life member of Nelsonville Elks Lodge BPOE 543 and a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Athens County Shrine Club.

Mr. Maiden was the Nelsonville Area Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1996 and received the Roland Pierce Citizenship Award in 2001.

He is survived by a special friend, Ellen Whaley of Athens; daughters, Susan Lee Allen of Boston, MA and Beth Ann Maiden of the Heinzerling Foundation, Columbus; sons Jeff Maiden of Athens, Jay Karen Maiden of Chauncey; Tim Paula Maiden and Tom Kelly Maiden, both of Nelsonville; a brother, Don Maiden of Tampa, Florida; sisters, Judy Sinnott and Laura Klinebriel, both of Nelsonville; Jeanne Sanborn of Athens; Sarah Perry, South Carolina; and Jody Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC; 16 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Gail Kirkendall and a brother, Jimmy Maiden

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the Nelsonville First United Methodist Church, 205 W. Columbus St., Nelsonville, with The Reverend Katharin Foster officiating. Burial will be in Whitmore Cemetery, Buchtel. Friends may call at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville Thursday, January 8, 2004 from 6-8 PM where an Elks service will be conducted at 8:00 PM and Friday from 2-8 PM and Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Heinzerling Memorial Foundation, 1800 Heinzerling Drive, Columbus OH 43223.
