Dr. Albert E. Abe Leonard

Dr. Albert E. Abe Leonard 85 of Logan died October 7, 2005, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on May 1, 1920, to Walter and Ruth Brown Leonard. He was a graduate of Logan High School, Ohio Wesleyan University, the Cleveland College of Mortuary Science, and the Ohio State University Dental School. He excelled in athletics, playing football, basketball, and baseball at Logan High School and football and baseball in college. He was inducted into the LHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982. Dr. Leonard served in the Marines in the Pacific in World War II obtaining the rank of Major prior to discharge. He married Helen Haney on October 12, 1946. Dr. Leonard practiced dentistry in Logan for over 26 years before taking a position with Delta Dental of Ohio. He was a supporter of LHS athletics, attending numerous games and providing the first mouth protectors for the LHS football program. He was active in the Logan community serving on the Board of Directors of the Citizens Bank beginning in 1971, including serving as its chairman for nine years. He was a member of the Logan City Council for 2 years, a member of Rotary International, and President of Hocking Hills Country Club. He also served on the Board of Directors of Delta Dental of Ohio and on a regional committee that selected, from local candidates, appointees to West Point, the Naval Academy, and the Air Force Academy. Dr. Leonard was a longtime member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, serving on various church committees over the years. In the eyes and hearts of his family Dr. Leonard was an extraordinary person, humble, intelligent, and kind with a strong sense of integrity and fair play, a true gentleman.

He is survived by his wife Helen, two daughters Beverly Reding of Boston, MA and Mrs. Barbara Mac Knepshield of Middletown, Ohio, a brother, Dr. W. Robert Leonard of Canal Winchester, and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Phyllis Leonard Child.

Private funeral services will be held on Friday October 14, 2005, in the Cardaras Funeral Home 183 E. Second St. Logan with Rev. Gerald Frazee officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8PM with the family in attendance from 6-8PM.

Military graveside services will be conducted by the Hocking Co. Combined Color Guard Unit.
