Richard Henry Holl

Richard Henry Holl, life long resident of Logan, businessman and philanthropist, passed away peacefully at his home on October 13, 2005. Born on February 14, 1929, Dick was the son of Barton A. and Grace Holl.

Dick is survived by his wife, Mary, and four stepsons Dutch Junge Valery of Logan, Mark Holl of Sealy, TX, John Buntz Sharon of New Braunfels, TX and Paul Buntz Barbie of Portland, Texas. Dick was much loved by his 7 grandchildren, Morgan and Taylor Junge, Birttany, Kyle and Molly Buntz, and Holly and Sam Holl. He is also survived by his brother, Barton S. Holl Jean, sister Elizabeth Brandt and nephew, Richard Brandt Connie of Logan.

Dick was a 1947 graduate of Logan High School and a 1951 graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology. He served his country proudly as a 1st Lieutenant with the Army Corp of Engineers in Japan and Korea during the Korean Conflict.

Dick joined his father, Barton A. Holl, at Logan Clay Products in 1953, and devoted his entire professional career to building and maintaining the company and the clay pipe industry. In addition, Dick was co-owner of Holl Investments Company, with interests in oil & gas wells and breeding and racing harness horses. Dick?s business affiliations include his position as Director of the National Clay Pipe Institute Chairman and Director and Member of the Executive Committee of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, having served as a Director since 1976 and holding the office of First Vice Chairman from 1983 to 1985 and Chairman for 1985-86. He was a member of the American Society of Testing Materials and Past Director of the Ohio Contractors Association, Southeastern Ohio Regional Council, Universal Guaranty Life Insurance, BancOhio National Bank and Bank One of Athens.

Dick had a long and illustrious career outside of his business, giving generously of his time and resources to many rewarding endeavors. He served as a Director, Vice-President and President of the Logan-Hocking Chamber of Commerce and as a director of the Hocking County Community Improvement Corporation. He was a former member and Past President of the Buckeye Hills-Hocking Valley Regional Development District, a member of the Executive Advisory Board of the College of Business Administration at Ohio University, former member and Chairman of the Hocking County Regional Planning Commission and a Past Member of the Ohio Commodores.

Dick further served his community, with his father and siblings, through the formation of the Logan-Holl Foundation in 1986. As an original Trustee, he helped to oversee the disbursement of over $675, 000 in charitable grants and scholarships to organizations and individuals in the Logan-Hocking Community. Dick was a member, former President and current Vice-President of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He was also a member of American Legion Post 78, Delta Tau Delta Social Fraternity, Ohio University Trustees Academy and Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary Fraternity and St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

Throughout his life, Dick was recognized with many awards and citations. Some of particular note were the 1978 Man of the Year award from the Southeastern Ohio Regional Council, the 1978 award for a decade of service to the Buckeye Hills-Hocking Valley Regional Development District, the 1987 Honorary Lifetime Member award from the Logan-Hocking Chamber of Commerce, the 2003 Award of Service from the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, the 2004 Barton Holl Citizenship award, received together with his wife, Mary, a 2004 Inductee to the Logan High School Academic Hall of Fame and the 2005 Governor?s Award from the Ohio Arts Council for business support of the arts.

Funeral Services will held at 10:30AM Monday in St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Logan with Rev. Paul Elhard officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cardaras Funeral Home 183 E. Second St. Logan on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8PM and at the church on Monday 1 hour prior to the services.

Military Graveside Services will be conducted by the Hocking County Combined Color Guard Unit.
