Carl Edward Smathers

Carl Edward Smathers, 87, of Buchtel, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006 at Chillicothe VA Medical Center. He was born December 1, 1918 in Buchtel, the son of the late Carl and Grace Bryson Smathers.

Carl was World War II Army veteran and was a life member of the VFW and DAV in Logan. He worked for Athens Ice and Storage and retired from Borden in Columbus.

He is survived by two sons, Paul Diana Smathers of Nelsonville and Jeff Mary Ann Smathers of The Plains; five daughters, Shirley Ralph Whalen of Carbon Hill, Carol Dane and special friend, Howard Meeks of Nelsonville, Chris Kinnison and special friend, Rusty May of Nelsonville, Kay Doug Sealey of Buchtel and Jan Jones and special friend, Steve Seslar of Edgerton; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; two brothers, Stanley ?Doc? Lois Smathers and John ?Pete? Charlotte Smathers both of Athens; a sister, Hazel Calendine and special friend, Larry Isel of Athens, his first wife, Garnet Smathers of Nelsonville and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents and second wife, Mary Lou Alvis Smathers, he was preceded in death by brothers, Earl, Harry, Abner and Charlie Smathers, infant son, Carl Smathers, granddaughter, Christy Newman and three great grandsons, Jared Daubenmire, Brandon Travis and Zachary David Pickett.

Casketbearers for Mr. Smathers will be his grandsons, Lee Newman, John and Scott Smathers, Jeremy and Jamie Winchell, Ryan and Bryan Kinnison and Max Jones. Honorary casketbearers will be great grandsons, Alex and Kenzie Winchell, Brennan Smathers, Zach Withrow and Austin Travis.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville with Rev. Paul Taylor officiating. Interment will be at Shaw Cemetery, Logan where a military graveside service will be conducted by the Combined Veterans Burial Detail of Hocking County. Friends and family may call Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
