Max E. Valkinburg, 82, of Nelsonville, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2007 at Logan Health Care Center, Logan. He was born May 15, 1924 in Nelsonville, son of the late Lemuel Valkinburg and Bessie Clarey Valkinburg Azbell. Max was the widow of Virginia Crain Valkinburg.
Max retired in 1976 as Nelsonville Police Chief and he was a police officer for 33 years in the area. Max was Chief Deputy for the Athens County Sheriffs Department, a former Juvenile Probation Officer for Athens County, and former a member of the Nelsonville City Council and the Nelsonville Lions Club. He was a WWII Army Veteran.
Max is survived by two sons, David Suzie Valkinburg of Logan and Robert Crystal Valkinburg of Nelsonville; three daughters, Diane David Rood of Columbus, Mary Lou Joe Eckels of Groveport and Cathy Steve Evans of Logan; fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Adams and Catherine Valkinburg.
Funeral services will be 11 A.M. Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville with Rev. Marvin Walker officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.
