James Thurman Hellyer

April 21, 1917 — January 16, 2008

James Thurman Hellyer, 90, of Lancaster, formerly of Nelsonville, passed away, Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Pickering House, Lancaster, following a long illness. He was born April 21, 1917 in Nelsonville, son of the late Harrison Henry and Mabel Marie Laff Hellyer. He was married to Alberta Belle Hughes Hellyer, who survives, for 67 years.

Thurman never got to return home to Nelsonville, which he longed to do, but he has now gone home to his Heavenly Father. He retired in 1979 after forty years with the Columbus and Southern Ohio Electric Co. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Knights of Pythias.

In addition to his wife, Alberta, he is survived by sons, James Hellyerfriend, Tom Wetzel of Cincinnati and William Jean Hellyer of Cincinnati; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; sister, Mary Rock of Dublin; several nieces and nephews; and daughter-in-law, Regina Hellyer of Cincinnati.

Thurman was as special as his name. He will be missed and well remembered by his family, friends, and many caregivers especially those at Reflections Retirement Community, all of whom he loved dearly.

At his request, a graveside service for the immediate family was held Monday, January 21, 2008 at Gravel Hill Cemetery, Cheshire with Rev. Paul Taylor officiating. Arrangements are by Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville.

The family suggests contributions in Thurman’s memory be made to FairHope Hospice & Palliative Care, 282 Sells Rd., Lancaster, Ohio 43130.
