Laurence Merlin Shaner

November 14, 1918 — March 10, 2008

Laurence Merlin Shaner, 89, of Glouster, passed away Monday, March 10, 2008 at his residence. He was born November 14, 1918 in Morgan County, son of the late Elmer and Sylvia Roberts Shaner.

Laurence was a well known businessman in the area and was the owner and operator of the former Stokes Furniture Store. He was known for his skill and craftsmanship as a carpenter and was once employed at Kittle Lumber Co. He was a charter member of the Trimble Lions Club and attended the Church of Christ. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. Laurence was a kind, caring, gentle man, who would give anybody who needed it, the shirt off his back and expect nothing in return.

He is survived by sons, Merlin Eugene Marsha Shaner of Texas, Gary Andrew Sherry Shaner of Alabama and Gregory Shaner of Glouster; daughters, Vickie Dewey Tackett of Waverly and Tammy George Pallo of Jacksonville; Wilma Lazartic, mother of Gene and Gary; Betty McAllister, mother of Greg, Vickie and Tammy, 15 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; brothers, David Shaner of Malta and Mark Mary Shaner of Glouster; sisters, Audry Steffy of Glouster, Betty Myron McCall of Glouster, Pearl Pierce of Newark and Lois Smith of Reynoldsburg and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Laurence is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Rose Smith; brother Lowell Shaner and infant brother, Ivan Shaner.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 14 at Cardaras Funeral Home, 30 Main St., Glouster with Pastor Clifford L. Smith officiating. Burial will be at Maplewood Cemetery, Glouster where a military graveside service will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit. Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
