Wilbur D. Mender

Wilbur D. Mender, 97, of Nelsonville, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in The Plains. He was born June 1, 1911 in Nelsonville, son of the late Earl D. and Edna Elizabeth Essex Mender.

Wilbur retired from the Athens Messenger as a reporter and columnist and was a WWII Army Veteran. He was a former Mayor of Nelsonville, former school board member and was a member of the Nelsonville American Legion. Wilbur was an active Boy Scout Leader.

He is survived by four sisters, Deloris Nelson, Marguerite Mender and Lillian Kieffer all of Nelsonville and Shirley Dolman of Perrysburg and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Diane Davis of Nelsonville.

Wilbur was preceded in death by two brothers, Babe Mender and Earl Mender Jr.

Funeral services will be held 1 P.M., Saturday, June 14, 2008, at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, with Military Graveside Services being conducted by the Athens County Combined Color Guard Unit. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, from 11 A.M. until the time of service.
