Clyde Morris Poppy Haning

Clyde Morris ""Poppy"" Haning, 88, of Nelsonville, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2008 at his residence. He was born July 10, 1919 in Pageville, son of the late Clyde and Hattie Belle Graham Haning. He was the widower of the late Alberta Brickles Haning, who passed away February 18, 2008.

Clyde attended the Pageville School. He was a corporal Tech 5 during World War II and was stationed with an Air Corps radar division in Panama. After the war, Clyde managed his own, very successful grocery in New Marshfield, Ohio. After many mines shut down in 1953, he became employed by the Kroger Company. He worked for 31 years as an assistant customer coordinator in Crooksville, Athens, Logan, and Nelsonville. At the request of customers, Kroger employees are given appliqué roses for their nametags, which are awarded for ""good deeds"". Over his 31 year career, Clydes nametag gathered 79 roses because customers stated the ""He really and truly cared"".

Clyde was formerly a member of the Pageville Methodist Church and a member of the Nelsonville First Christian Church and was also a member of F&AM Constitution Lodge #426, New Marshfield.

He is survived by a son, Gene Courtney Nina Haning of New Lexington; a daughter, Anita Joyce Donald Webb of Athens; four grandchildren, Shawn Courtney Haning of Marietta, Alison Brooke Tim Cassady of Logan, Dar Tristan Whitlatch and Trey Austin Whitlatch both of Athens; two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Nicole and Layton James Cassady of Logan; a brother and sister-in-law, Max and Maxine Haning of Albany; sister-in-law, Ruth Jewell of Coal Grove and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, and wife of 61 years, Alberta, he was preceded in death by an infant child; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Dana O. Luella Haning, Lester G. Cora Haning, Ray M. Myrtle Haning and Willis Pearl Haning; Four Brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law, Max E. Hazel Brickles, Robert A. Betty Brickles, Melvin R. Olive Smith and Raymond Jewell and several nephews and a niece.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, June 29, 2008 at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville with Pastor Tom Hanning officiating. Interment will be at Wells Cemetery, Pageville, Meigs Co. Friends may call Saturday, June 28, 2008 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the funeral home where a Masonic service will be conducted by the Constitution Lodge at 7:30 PM.
