Herman W. Lanning Sr.

Herman W. Lanning Sr., 81, of Nelsonville, passed away Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Doctors Hospital in Nelsonville. He was born July 19, 1927, in Athens County, son of the late Virgil Lanning and Freda Mae Paulk Bruce. Herman was the widow of the late Delores Faye Swyers Lanning.

He was a retired machinist at Rockwell in Newark, a WWII Air Force Veteran and a member of the Buchtel United Methodist Church. Herman was also a former council member, marshal and mayor of Buchtel.

He is survived by sons, William Jeanne Lanning of Jacksonville, Florida, Fred Lanning of Maxville and Butch Mary Lanning of Virginia; daughters, Lori Slone of Ripley, Ohio and Diana Lanning of Ft. Myers Florida; several grandchildren and great grandchildren and brothers, Carl Bruce of Buchtel, Roger Bruce of Buchtel, Richard Bruce of Glouster and Sam Bruce of Corning.

In addition to his parents and wife, Herman was preceded in death by a daughter, Deanna Mae Koon, one brother and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held 1 P.M., Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, with Rev. David Shoemaker officiating. Interment will be in Whitmore Cemetery, with military graveside services being conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 11 A.M., until the time of the service.
