James Gretz, 83, of Chauncey, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2009 at his residence. He was born May 26, 1925 in Circle Hill, son of the late Andy and Anna Kachman Gretz. He was the widower of the late Iris L. Walton Gretz, who passed away September 29, 1997.
James retired from the Kerr Distributing Co. where he drove a delivery truck and he was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. He was formerly employed as a driver for the Wholesome Bread Co. and after his retirement was a driver for Don Wood Automotive. He was a life member of The Plains VFW Post 7176 and a longtime member of the Athens American Legion Post.
He is survived by sons, James Michael ""Mike"" Betty Gretz, Marion Andrew ""Ted"" Gretz and Timothy Lee ""Tim"" Gretz all of Chauncey; grandchildren, Chad Susan Gretz and Amanda Gretz both of Chauncey, Timothy Charla Gretz of The Plains and Joseph Tracy McCune of New Marshfield and 8 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Allison McCune; sisters, Mary and Elizabeth Gretz and Anna Hammond; brothers, John and William ""Babe"" Gretz.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville with Pastor Jeff Schofield officiating. Interment will be at Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield where a military graveside service will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit. Friends may call Wednesday, February 4, 2009 from 5-8 PM at the funeral home.
