Vera Shafer Newman

Vera Shafer Newman, 92, of Nelsonville, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in The Plains. She was born March 15, 1917 in Nelsonville, daughter of the late James W. and Martha B. Blosser Shafer. Vera was the widow of the late George A. Newman, who passed away in 1995.

She was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church in Nelsonville and was very active in church activities until several years ago, when illness prevented her participation. Although illness took its toll, she never forgot her church, family or friends.

Vera is survived by a son, George W. ?Bill? Sue Newman of Rockbridge; a daughter, Elizabeth E. ?Beth? Newman of Rockbridge; grandchildren, Amy L. Grant Volquardsen of Logan, Erica D. Newman and Troy Gill of Mt. Sterling, Ohio and George D. Sonja Newman of Oxnard, California; great grandchildren, Lindsey Stirek of Chicago, Illinois and Makenna Volquardsen of Logan; sisters, Ruth Brooker of Nelsonville, June Hoce of Carbon Hill; a brother, Robert Shafer of Albany and sister-in-law, Eileen Shafer of Nelsonville.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Amelia Evans, Margaret Campbell, Bessie Shafer, Birchie Colbert and Alberta Collins; a brother, James L. Shafer and an infant great grandchild, Eva Rose Newman.

Funeral services will be held 10 A.M., Tuesday, August 25, 2009 in the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, with Rev. Paul Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, from 5-8 P.M.
