Harold V. Felton

Harold V. Felton, 92, of McArthur, passed away Thursday, December 10, 2009 at his residence. He was born March 2, 1917 in McArthur, son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Gertrude Edna Dillon Felton. Harold was married to Ferne Rowland Felton on June 19, 1943, who survives.

He was a school superintendent associated with Vinton County School system for 38 years and was a member of the McArthur Presbyterian Church. Harold was a WWII Army Veteran, serving in the European Theatre, receiving a Purple Heart and 4 Bronze Stars for his service in Normandy, ""Battle of The Bulge"" where he was wounded, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes. He was a 60 year member of Delta Lodge #207 F&AM, McArthur Chapter #102 R.A.M., Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, Trowel Council #71, Aladdin Shrine and Sereno Chapter #128 OES in McArthur. Harold was county commissioner for 12 years, was chairman of the Vinton County Republican Party for 15 years and was a member and President of The Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library Board of Trustees for 38 years, receiving the Trustee of the Year award in 1999 from the Ohio Library Council. He was a member and past chaplain of Vinton County VFW Post #5299. Harold was a charter member of the McArthur Fire Department.

In addition to his wife Ferne, he is survived by several nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Dixie Rowland of Knoxville, Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph Thomas, Vance Arlin and Robert William Felton; sisters, Harriet Garnet Hunter, Mary Elizabeth Chappell, Gertrude Portante and Margaret Robinson; sister-in-law, Louise Charles Poling and brother-in-law, George Rowland.

Funeral services will be held 1 P.M., Wednesday, December 16, 2009 in the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur with Rev. Deacon Bill Bales officiating. Interment will be in Elk Cemetery, McArthur with military graveside services being conducted by the McArthur VFW Post #5299. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 2-8 P.M. with Masonic services being held at 7:30 P.M.
