John H. Pierce, 86, of Chauncey, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011 at his residence. He was born March 7, 1924 in Nelsonville, son of the late Ruben W. and Elizabeth Eden Pierce. John was married to the late Helen Joyce Blackford Pierce, who passed away July 3, 1983.
John owned Cozy Corner Bar in Chauncey for 40 years, was a WWII Veteran of the United States Army, he was at the invasion of Normandy and earned the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the Bronze Arrowhead. He was a life member of the Athens VFW and Athens American Legion.
John is survived by his loving companion for 24 years, Ann Sapp; sons, Philip Sue Blackford of Pomeroy, John Somsri Pierce of Xenia, Kenny Diane Pierce of Athens, Mike Vicky Pierce of The Plains and Rich Karen Pierce of Chauncey; a daughter, Mary Tom VanDyke of Albany; daughter-in-law, Julia Pierce of Bradenton, Florida; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sons, Paul, Jerry and Rob Pierce; a daughter, Beth Pierce; six brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held 1 P.M., Monday, February 28, 2011 in the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, with Rev. Gary Alton officiating. Interment will be in Pedigo Cemetery, Athens County, with military graveside services being conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M.
