Lester Chalmer ""Shag"" Carr, Sr., 85, of New Plymouth, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Pickering House, Lancaster. He was born August 29, 1925 in Cannelville, Ohio son of the late Lester and Mamie Cartwright Carr. He was married to Nancy J. Shipley Carr, who survives, for 56 years.
Chalmer was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor from 1943 to 1945. He retired from Benedict Coal Company and Engle Construction after more than 50 years of service. He enjoyed visiting with everyone, especially his friends at the Vinton County Airport.
In addition to his wife, Chalmer is survived by sons, Larry Joann Bolyard of Groveport, Lester C. Chris Carr, Jr. of New Lexington, Randy L. Beth Carr of Logan, Steve J. Lisa Carr of New Plymouth and Scott Carr of Bowling Green; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a brother, Russell Nancy Carr of Roseville; sisters, Katie William Ryder of South Zanesville, Midge Sidwell of McConnellsville and Pearl Anders of Roseville; and two very special friends, Tom Wilkerson and Gene Engle.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James Lester Carr and three sisters, Edna Maxwell, Verla Harris and Elsie Fisher.
Funeral services will be held 11 A.M., Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur with Pastor Mike Crabtree officiating. Interment will be at Elk Cemetery, McArthur where a military graveside service will be conducted by the McArthur VFW Post #5299. Friends may call from 6-8 PM, Monday, April 18, 2011 at the funeral home.
