Helen K. Shingler

June 26, 1929 — February 18, 2012

Helen Katherine Ryan Shingler died February 18, 2012, age 82. She had been living in Nelsonville for several years, and was an Athens County native. Helen passed on during her final illness at Hickory Creek of Athens in The Plains, from long standing health problems.

Helen was born in Athens at home on Patton Street on June 26, 1929 to William Stanley Ryan and Ivalue Beekman Ryan, the third child in a family of six children. Her siblings are William Ryan, Jane Ryan Haught, Robert Ryan, Betty Ryan Gilkey, and Patrick Ryan, who all survive.

Helen married William Eugene Shingler soon after graduation from Albany High School and became a homemaker and mother to five children, living in Columbus for many years before returning to live in Athens County after her husband's death in 1983.

She was employed by Schottensteins and by Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities before retiring. Helen loved to sing and had a lovely voice, she enjoyed going to church, talking with friends and family, and pampering her beloved dogs.

She is survived by her children William Stephen Shingler, Sandra Elaine Russell, Linda Ann Curry Mike, Sally Rebecca Baur Robert, John David Shingler Landa. She is also survived by her grandchildren Valiant Kibler Jr. Amy and their daughter Rylee; Justin Kibler Cassie and their children Cooper, Ava, and Makenzie; Chloe Russell, daughter of Sandra; and the children of Robert and Sally Baur: Joshua Baur Brittany, Jeremy Baur and Zachary Baur, along with many nieces and nephews, friends and relatives.

Helen was preceeded in death by her husband William Eugene Shingler, also from Athens County. The family will have a private memorial at a future date; there is no public memorial service. Cremation is planned.

The family would like to thank William and Gladene Ryan for their exceptional kindness and help to our mother in her final days, making sure she had what she needed and giving great comfort to our mother and to us.

Our mother had a big heart, and a great deal of warmth and kindness. We will all miss her.
