Brooks Woofter, 88, of Shawnee, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2012 at his residence. He was born September 20, 1923 in Camden-on-Gauley, West Virginia, son of the late Robert H. and Dora Jane Perkins Woofter.

Brooks was in the Navy during WWII serving on the USS Wiley in the Asiatic Pacific, American Area and European African from 1943 – 1946. He retired from the Ohio Department of Corrections after 35 years of service, including Lancaster and Nelsonville.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Aleta Lorraine Young Woofter; sons, David Fran Woofter of New Lexington and John Charlotte Woofter of Shawnee; daughters, Vickie Bill Burnett of Chipley, Florida, Naomi Tony Ellis Colvin of New Straitsville and Mary Tom Scott of Shawnee; twenty two grandchildren; twenty three great grandchildren; brother, Andy Woofter of Frenchton, West Virginia; sister, Martha Smith of Michigan and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Brooks was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Woofter; daughter, Linda Woofter; brothers, Jim, Clarence, Dick and Paul Woofter and sisters, Eula Woofter, Hazel Gibbs, Ruth Woofter, Freda Liggitt, Liz Rittler and Betty Gaddy.

Funeral services will be held 1 P.M., Friday, March 16, 2012 at the New Straitsville Apostolic Gospel Church, 333 W. Main St., New Straitsville, Ohio 43766, with Rev. Mike Thompson and Rev. Mike Martin officiating. Interment will be in Beach Grove Cemetery, Perry County, with military graveside services being conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit. Friends may call at the Cardaras Funeral Home, 183 E. Second St., Logan, on Thursday, from 4-8 P.M. and on Friday, one hour prior to the services at the church.
