Betty Jean Midkiff

June 13, 1925 — May 14, 2012

Betty Jean Midkiff, 86, of Nelsonville, passed away Monday, May 14, 2012 at her residence. She was born June 13, 1925 in Corning, Ohio, daughter of the late Sylvester and Helen Schlingerman Ross. Betty Jean was the widow of the late Paul A. Midkiff. They were married for 65 years.

She graduated from Nelsonville High School in 1943. Betty Jean was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in several sports including basketball, volleyball and archery. Her career included working as a switchboard operator, receptionist and secretary for 15 years at Brooks Shoe Factory Office, one year at Logan Head Start and 16 years at Tri-County Vocational School as the Director's Secretary. Betty Jean served as Deacon in the First Christian Church, was a Life Member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post #3467 and was also Past President.

She is survived by her three children, Edward Linda Midkiff of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, Paula Chris Coffman of Coshocton and Clark Midkiff of Nelsonville; three grandchildren, Shawn Stephanie Coffman of Pickerington, Josh Ashley Coffman of Coshocton, and Amity Oshel of Point Pleasant, West Virginia; five great grandchildren, Max and Chloe Coffman of Pickerington, McKayla Oshel and Colton Fridley of Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Jace Coffman of Coshocton; a brother, Bill Judy Ross of Albany; a sister, Dorothy Harry Pollock of Mogadore, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Betty Jean was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Ross.

Funeral services will be held 2 P.M., Friday, May 18, 2012 in the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, with Rev. Tom Hanning officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery New Addition, Nelsonville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, from 6-8 P.M.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of Betty Jean Midkiff to the First Christian Church, 200 Fort Street, Nelsonville, Ohio 45764, the VFW Post #3467, 216 Lake Hope Dr., Nelsonville, Ohio 45764 or to the Appalachian Visiting Nurses Association, 30 Herrold Ave., Athens, Ohio 45701.
