Chester Devon Lackey died on Aug. 1, 2012 at Hocking Valley Community Hospital. He was born in New Straitsville, Ohio, on Sept. 15, 1913 to Marvin Venier and Clara Neely Lackey, and was the second of four children.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Albert Venier Lackey and Herbert Marvin Lackey, sister Zerna Lackey Stiverson, and his wife. He was married to Edna Frances Hite, daughter of George Elmer and Lillian Maud Bright Hite on June 11, 1938. She died Oct. 7, 1971.
After finishing the 10th grade at Logan High School in 1930, he started working in the oilfield with his father, and later worked for the Reno Oil Company until he was drafted into the Navy during WWII. He served as a boiler operator on the APD Walter X. Young from May 10, 1944 to Nov. 8, 1945, serving in the Pacific. After his return he worked for the Kachelmacher Estate oilfield, until it was sold to the Atlantic International Oil & Gas Co. He acted as their foreman until he retired in 1975. He then worked part time for the Leonard-Lyke now Cardaras Funeral Home. In 2011 he was honored as the oldest WWII veteran in Hocking County. In May 2012, at age 98, he was granted an honorary high school diploma from the Logan-Hocking School District.
He is survived by son George M. Lackey Karolyn of Cadillac, MI and daughter Ruth A. Tobias Robert; of Beavercreek OH; 4 grandchildren-- Eric D. Tobias, Beavercreek, Ohio and Lori Tobias Wieland Mark of Dayton, Ohio ; Stephen M. Lackey Beth and Susan Marie Lackey Knoth Brian of Michigan; 10 great-grandchildren: Stephanie, Thad, Seth, Owen, and Addie Lackey, and Jessica Junttonen; Grace, Faith and Caleb Knoth, and Cora Wieland. Also survived by caring nephews and niece: Chris Stiverson Kathy, Walter Stiverson Carol, and Mary Stiverson Baker Dan; and loving friend Fran Inboden.
He was a member of New Hope U.M. Church in Gore, the Scenic Hills Senior Center in Logan and the American Legion

Funeral services will be held 11 A.M., Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Cardaras Funeral Home, 183 E. Second St., Logan, with Pastor Frank Frazier officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan, with military graveside services being conducted by the Hocking County Honor Guard. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M.
