Margaret J. “Peggy” McDonald, 86, of Nelsonville, passed away Friday September 21, 2012 at the Brookside Rehabilitation Center at Hickory Creek Nursing Home, The Plains. She was born February 25, 1926 in Meigs County, the daughter of the late Leo R. and Lucile Carleton Story. She was the widow of the late E.L. “Dick” McDonald who passed away February 28, 2010.
Peggy graduated from Ohio University and was a bacteriologist. She was instrumental in opening the labs at both the Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital and the Southeast Ohio Tuberculosis Hospital and retired as a bacteriologist from the Athens Mental Health Center. Peggy played the violin, was an avid organic gardener and enjoyed volunteering at food pantries and soup kitchens in the area. She was a member of the Church of the Epiphany in Nelsonville and the Risen Redeemer Church.
She is survived by one son, Richard E. McDonald of Pomeroy; two daughters, Carolyn (Fritz) Bookman and Christine McDonald both of Nelsonville; grandchildren, Christopher (Melinda) Bookman, Timothy (Misty) Bookman, Jessica (Tod) Miller, Betsy (Corey O’Malley) Lash, Seth (Jamie) McDonald, Daniel (Arelle) McDonald, Jennifer (Ryan) Bradford, Sarah (Andy) Herbert, Benjamin McDonald and Katie McDonald; great grandchildren, Patrick, Logan, Gabe, Fritz H. and Meghan Bookman, Jack, Max, Jillian, Jenna and Jonathan McDonald, Michael and Patrick Herbert and Lucy Bradford; a sister, Janice (Charles) Lochary of Matthews, NC and many nieces and nephews and all of her loving friends from Interim Healthcare.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Mark Story McDonald; two grandsons, Patrick Bookman and Patrick McDonald; a sister, Betty McConnaughey and a brother, Robert Story.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Sunday, September 30, 2012 at the Church of the
Epiphany, 193 Jefferson St., Nelsonville with Father William McCleery and Pastor Christopher Bookman officiating. Interment will be in the Carleton Cemetery, Meigs County. Friends may call Saturday, September 29, 2012 from 5-8 PM at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville.
