Harold W. Thomas

Harold W. Thomas, 87, of Chauncey, passed away Monday, May 12, 2014 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in The Plains. He was born July 16, 1926 in Athens, son of the late Nathan and Virgie McNabb Thomas. Harold was married to Cleo Helen Crabtree Thomas, who survives.

He was a painter for Ohio University and retired after 45 years. Harold was a WWII Army Veteran at Battle of The Bugle, a life member of The Plains VFW #7174, a life member of the Athens American Legion and Forty and Eight.

He is survived by his sons, Harold R. “Butch” Thomas of Athens and Michael R. (Tammy) Thomas of Sugar Grove; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; a sister, Virgie Bumgardner of Nelsonville and son-in-law, Paul Smathers of Nelsonville.

In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his daughter, Diana Lynn Smathers; grandson, Brian Thomas; brothers, Kenneth, Cecil and Gerald Thomas and sisters, Signa Crabtree, Theta Graham, Irene and Iris Thomas.

Funeral services will be held 10 A.M., Friday, May 16, 2014 in the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, with Rev. Gary Alton officiating. Interment will be in Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield, with military graveside services being conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, from 5-8 P.M.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of Harold W. Thomas to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, 700 Children’s Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43205.
