Robert Max Mayer

Robert Max Mayer, 70, of Athens, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014 from complications of surgery at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. He was born April 29, 1944, in Oakland, California, son of the late James Lyon and Elizabeth Hockett Mayer. He was married to Ruth Ann Devol Mayer, who survives, for 44 years.

Bob graduated from B.G. Farragut High School in Rota Spain and attended the University of Colorado where he received a Bachelors Degree in International Relations. He retired from the FBI after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Athens Rotary Club, Retired FBI Agents Association and the Carbon Hill Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. Robert was the son of a Naval Officer. He and his sister, Ruth, traveled the country and Spain with their parents. He was fluent in Spanish and learned Chinese while with the FBI. He was very educated and was a life-long learner. He had his Private Pilots license and loved planes. He could talk to anyone and loved meeting new people. He was a Special Agent with the FBI when he met the love of his life, Ruth Ann. The FBI took them to New York, Texas, Illinois, California and Puerto Rico. They finally moved to Athens for the FBI in 1983, where he made many friends. He loved animals and rescued many. He recently had started horse back riding again since as a youth he worked as a Ranch-hand at a cattle ranch. His family loved him dearly and will miss his humor, smile, and wisdom forever.

In addition to his wife, Ruth Ann, he was survived by his sister, Ruthi (Yannis) Miskis of Miami, FL; a nephew, David (Angela) Miskis of New York City; brother-in-law, Calvin (Betty) Eugene Devol of Buchtel; sister-in-law, Dixie Ross Devol of Lancaster; nieces and nephews, William Currens (Gail Johnson) Devol of Chardon, OH, Marjorie Daisy Devol MD of Carbon Hill, Elizabeth Anne Devol of Columbus, John Christopher (Mary) Maisch of Fairbanks, AK, Ross Clark (Melissa) Devol of Moor Park, CA, Gerald Barton (Kelly) Devol of Holland, OH, Lisa Marie (Jerry) Briles of Stephens City, VA and Robbie Randy (Lisa) Devol of Lancaster; great nieces and nephews, Abigail (Eric) Williams, Martin Mikusa, Nicholas (Sunny) Devol, Lauren Mikusa, Jessica Devol, Amanda Devol, Nathaniel Devol, Taylor Devol, Clark Devol, Claire Devol, Klara Maisch, Jordan Maisch, Nicholas Devol, Shawn Devol, Nicholas Mitchell and Catherine Mitchell; great-great nephews and niece, Calvin Williams, Oliver Williams and Tabitha Crimm; numerous special cousins in Israel, Germany, Sweden and the United States and his Cockapoo, Gabby.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Marjorie and Gerald Devol; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Devol Maisch; a brother-in-law, Clark Arsceen Devol; his furry children, Otto, Max, Alf, Lucy, Kate, Gracie and a horse Buttercup.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the Carbon Hill Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Hawk St., Carbon Hill with Rev. Monty McCune officiating. Interment will be at Carbon Hill Cemetery in Carbon Hill where Military Graveside services will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard. Friends may call Saturday from 5-8 PM at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, OH 45764 and on Sunday, one hour prior to the service, at the church.
