Thomas Walter Thornton, 81, of South Bloomingville, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at his residence. He was born July 6, 1932 in Logan, the son of the late Walter and Rose Ryan Thornton.
Thomas retired from the United States Army and was a Vietnam War veteran. He was a two time Bronze Star recipient and was inducted in to the Ohio Military Hall of fame in 2005. He was also a ROTC instructor in Dayton.
He is survived by his sons, Tom (Angie) Thornton and Mike Thornton both of Amanda; daughters, Sheila (Greg) Warren of Nelsonville and Molly (Tom) Sibrik of Canal Winchester; step-children, Greg (Linda) Waidelich of Amanda and Nancy (Mike) Benroth of Amanda; grandchildren; Connor Sibrik, Bryan (Whitney) Warren, Brandy (Coby) Long, Isaac and Abigail Thornton; great-grandchildren, Emma, David, Lilly and Charlie.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant brother and a great-granddaughter, Riley Grace.
Tom’s wishes were to be cremated. A memorial gathering will take place Friday, June 27, 2014 from 6-8 PM at the Cardaras Funeral Home, 183 E. 2nd St., Logan.
The family suggests memorial contributions to be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312 and the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231.
