Roger Lee Bruce, 69, of Buchtel, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at Grant Medical Center in Columbus. He was born October 1, 1944 in Athens County, son of the late Henry and Freda Paulk Bruce. Roger was married to Kay Moore Bruce, who survives.

He worked at Rocky Boot in Nelsonville and was a member of the Nelsonville Eagles. Roger was an outdoorsman who loved berry picking, ginseng, mushroom, rabbit and squirrel hunting, fishing, gardening, and junking.

In addition to his wife, Roger is survived by his children, Candy McClelland of West Virginia, Carol (Bill) Lapthorn of Hillsboro, Linda Leonard of Nelsonville, Emily (Tim) Hoffman of New Lexington, Dean Cunningham of Millfield, Tina (John Hanning) Owens of New Straitsville, Tera (Dego) Lanning of Stockport, Tabitha (Jim) Wolfe of New Straitsville and Tony (Kristy) Bruce of Newcomerstown; twenty-one grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; brothers, Sam Bruce of Hemlock, Carl Bruce of Buchtel and Richard “Ick” (Temp Shover) Bruce of Redtown; special friends Jim O’Nail, Gene Williams and Carl Allen; several nieces and nephews and his first wife, Maria Smathers of Kimbolton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mattie; son, Roger Bruce; granddaughter, Kari Mae Lewis; brothers, Herman Lanning and Bennie Bruce and sisters, Barb “Pete” Conkey, Pat Spencer and Martha Martin.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2014 in the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, with Pastor David Shoemaker officiating. Interment will be in Carbon Hill Cemetery, Carbon Hill. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 4-8 p.m.
