On April 30, 2016, a cloudy and overcast day Amos J. Weeks a southern gentleman went to be with his maker.
Amos Weeks, age 88, of Nelsonville, passed away at the Laurels of Athens, Saturday the 30th of April, 2016.
He was born May 16th 1927 in Poplar in Kosciusko, Mississippi, the son of William David Weeks and Winnie Pearl Pender-Weeks. Amos grew up in Kosciusko and attended Shady Grove School. At the age of 15, during WWII when the farm workers had been called to duty, he and several friends were recruited to work on farms in South Dakota. Afterwards, he returned to Mississippi and worked on building ships for the war effort in the shipyard at Biloxi. In 1944 at the age of 18 he joined the United States Marine Corps and completed the rigorous USMC basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina. Afterwards he was scheduled to go to Italy to fight, but with the war ending in Europe, he was assigned to the Brooklyn New York Navy Yard and guarded the Navy ships and facilities from spy's and saboteurs and transported military prisoners to other facilities along the east coast. Amos would say, "Once a Marine, always a Marine", and was proud of his service throughout his life. He could often be seen wearing something highlighting his membership in the elite fraternity of the Corps. After the war Amos worked in 7 states as a lineman for the New York Central Railroad until he retired.
He was married to Dorothy (Dottie) Dillon of Kentucky on October 8th, 1955. Dorothy was the beloved mother of his children and died in 1981. His second wife, Joy Selly, preceded him in death in 1997 as well as a brother, David Earl Weeks and sister, Lula Pearl Weeks Tyler.
He is survived by his son, William Albert Weeks (Paula) of Nelsonville, and his two daughters, Winnie Ellen Weeks-Jeyes (Arthur Jeyes) of Severn, Maryland and Stella Jean Weeks of Lancaster , Ohio, and a former daughter in law, Harriett McClain (Weeks) Brose, Frank Brose and a favorite nephew David Earl Weeks of Athens. David Earl spent many hours and days helping, caring for Amos as his health declined. He also leaves four grandchildren Michael (Ike) weeks, Brooke Anne Hines, Shawna (Weeks) Blackstone, Kiersten Brose and eight great-grandchildren, and several brother and sister in laws (Dillon / Curry families) and two special friends; Alameda Salyers of Nelsonville and Beverly Schumacher of Athens.
He was a member of and regularly attended the Wesleyan Church of Nelsonville; and a 48 year member of American Legion Post 21 of Athens as well as the Athens County Historical Society.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Friday, May 6, 2016 at the Nelsonville Wesleyan Church, corner of Chestnut and First St., with Rev. Mike Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Glouster, with military graveside services being conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit. Friends may call at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, on Thursday, from 5-8 p.m. and on Friday, one hour prior to the service at the church.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of Amos Weeks to the Nelsonville Wesleyan Church, 600 Chestnut St., Nelsonville, Ohio 45764.
