Virgil Dale Wright

Virgil Dale Wright, 88, of Savannah, Georgia, formerly of McArthur, passed away on June 10, 2016 at Adena Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family. Dale was born on August 26, 1927 in Radcliff, OH, to the late Roy and Etta Bacus Wright. He was married to Alice Collins Wright on March 15, 1949, and she preceded him in death in 2002. Five children were born to this union, and all survive including: Gary (Saundra) Wright of Chillicothe, OH, Cheryl (Steve) Tolbert of League City, TX, Jan Lucik and fiancé Tim Wolfe of Savannah, GA, Terry (Angela) Wright of Tarpon Springs, FL, and Lorayne (Scott) Justis of League City, TX. Also surviving are grandchildren Deanna Levito, Kelly Bartlett, Kerry Kisor, Lynda McKendree, Kim Sexton, Tara Tolbert, Emily Moore, Michael Lucik, Misty Wright, Leah and Kaley Justis, as well as 14 great grandchildren.

He graduated from Vinton Rural High School in 1947 after serving his country in the U.S. Navy Seabees during WWII on the LST75 and USS Arthur Middleton in the South Pacific Admiralty Islands. Dale retired from ODOT in 1993. He also owned and operated Wright’s Market with his wife in downtown McArthur for several years, and he was a skilled carpenter. He was a member of the First Christian Church in McArthur, where he served as a deacon and sang in the choir and the men’s choral group.

Dale was from a large family including 4 brothers and 2 sisters who survive: Gene Wright, John Wright, Jim Wright, Larry Wright, Yvonne Catee and Louelma Bay. He was preceded in death by his brother Homer Wright and sisters Marguerite Adkins, Meryl Zinn, Shirley Macomber, Mary Kate Wright, Artie Mae Perry and Susan Adkins.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2016 in the First Christian Church, 207 E. High St., McArthur, with Rev. Dennis Sparks officiating. Interment will be in Elk Cemetery, McArthur. Friends may call at the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 210 W. High St., McArthur, on Monday, from 5-8 p.m. and on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service at the church.
