David Earl Boston, 76, of Buchtel, passed away Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Kobacker House in Columbus. He was born April 6, 1940 in Parkersburg, son of the late Glenn Earl Boston and Louise Wood Boston (Beech) Brown. David is survived by his wife of 57 years, Vickie Smith Boston, who survives.
David graduated from Parkersburg High School and then attended Marshall University on a football scholarship where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He began his teaching career in 1966 and taught physical education and health for 30 years. Dave retired from Nelsonville-York at the end of the 1995-1996 school year. While teaching at Nelsonville-York he was head football coach and earned 9 TVC titles, was named Football Coach of the Year 7 times and coached a team to a State Championship in 1981. He also aided the team as an assistant coach while his son, Dave Boston Jr., won 7 more TVC titles as head coach.
In addition to his wife, David is survived by his children, Donna (Kevin) Meade of Nelsonville, David E. (Sherry) Boston of Murray City and Diane (Brent) Handa of Groveport; grandchildren, Jason (Jessica) Meade of Nelsonville, Lisa (Clay) Meyer of Logan, Angela (Caleb Covert) Meade of Nelsonville, Kayle Boston and Michael Boston, both of Murray City, Rachael Handa of Columbus, Jessica Handa of Groveport and Clint Handa of Groveport; great grandchildren, Noah Arnold, Grant Meade and Cole Meade; brothers, Larry (Donna Jean) Boston of Parkersburg, West Virginia and Mike (Brenda) Brown of Mineral Wells, West Virginia; sister, Judy (Dave) McCrady of Parkersburg, West Virginia and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Brian Joesph Meade and stepfather, Beech Brown.
A celebration of Coach David Boston's life and accomplishments will be held at 5:00 PM on Saturday, October 1, 2016 on the 50 yard line at Boston Field at Nelsonville-York High School. The family invites everyone from Nelsonville and the surrounding communities to come and celebrate with them and wear the colors from your community's high school.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, October 3, 2016 in the Buchtel United Methodist Church, 17890 N. Akron Ave., Buchtel with Pastor Dave Shoemaker officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville. Friends may call at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, on Sunday, October 2, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. and on Monday, one hour prior to the service at the church.
