Wilford G. “Popeye” Maccombs, 88, of Nelsonville, passed away Friday, December 30, 2016 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus. He was born July 13, 1928 in Athens County, son of the late William Porter and Addie Hankeison Maccombs. Popeye was married to the late Phyllis Humphery Maccombs on May 28, 1955.
He was a member of the Nelsonville Wesleyan Church. An Army Veteran of the Korean War; member of Nelsonville Fire Department and York Township Volunteer Fire Department; Life-Member of the NRA; Tri County Nite Hunters; Elks Lodge BPOE #543, Nelsonville; VFW post #3467, Nelsonville; American Legion post #21, Athens; 65 yr. member of Paramuthia Lodge #25, F&AM; 60 yr. member of Athens Chapter #39, RAM; 60 yr. member of Athens Council #15, R&SM; 50 yr. member of Athens Commandry #15, KT; Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus; Aladdin Temple Shrine and Hillbilly Shrine Clan of Nelsonville, Marietta and Gallipolis.
Popeye was a tree surgeon all his life; Co-Owner and Operator of Altier and Maccombs Complete Tree Service for 30 years.
Popeye enjoyed farming, hunting and traveling. He was a kind, hard worker; he knew no stranger, could talk to anyone, gave of himself to do for others and volunteered for many causes.
He is survived by his sons, Ray (Debra) Maccombs, Max Maccombs and Rex (Beth) Maccombs, all of Nelsonville; daughters, Sue Ellen (David) Foote of Geneva, Ohio and Lea Marie (Steve) McKinley of Bluffton, South Carolina; grandchildren, Tessa, Shana, Kyle, Myra, Cody, Sara, Jeffrey, Dalton, Isaac and Carie; fourteen great grandchildren; brothers, Eldon (Jane) Maccombs of Nelsonville, Gerald Maccombs of Elyria, Paul (Rhetta) Maccombs of The Plains and Melvin (Jeri) Maccombs of Nelsonville; sisters, Velma Woody of Nelsonville and Gladys Dicken of Logan.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by infant brother, Donald and brother, Delbert; sisters, Opal McFarland and Alice Bachtel.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2017 in the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, with Pastor Mike Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Connett Cemetery, Athens County where military graveside honors will be held by the Combined Color Guard Unit. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, from 5-8 p.m. where there will be a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m.
