Bernard E. Carter

Bernard E. Carter, 93, of Nelsonville, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2017 at his residence.  He was born November 4, 1923 in Nelsonville, son of the late Edward R. and Edna B. Hartman Carter. Bernard was married to Roberta L. Taylor Carter, who survives, for 68 years.

Bernard was an Electrician with Columbus Southern Power and AEP for 32 years and was a life member of the Glenford Dugan American Legion Post 229 for 72 years.  He entered the United States Army by way of the draft January 5, 1943 and was assigned to Pomona, California where the 3525 Ordinance Medium Automotive Company was formed. After basic training he was off to Ft. Hood, Texas for further training and then to Camp Shanks, New York. On February 29, 1944 he boarded the Queen Mary to cross the Atlantic Ocean and arrived at Glasgow, Scotland. During his time in the Army he was assigned to the 1 st Army, 3 rd Army and the 15 th Army. He served 2 years, 11 months and 5 days reaching the rank of T-4 (Tech Sergeant).

In addition to his wife, Bernard is survived by his children, Donald E. (Kimberly J.) Carter of Stewart, Rita L. (Robert) Baughman, Gary M. (Barbara) Carter and Roger D. (Lisa) Carter of Nelsonville; grandchildren, Edward (Heather) Carter of Nelsonville, Robert E. (Patricia) Baughman of Nelsonville; Rebecca (Jared) Bunting of Buchtel, Randall Baughman of Nelsonville, Madison (Ashlee) Carter of Nelsonville, Marc Carter of Nelsonville, Alicia Carter of Nelsonville and Matthew Carter of Nelsonville; great grandchildren, Andrew, Avery and Owen Carter, Ross Baughman and Camden Bunting; sisters Maxine Sapp of Hamilton and Joan Cox of Nelsonville and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, June Watkins, Robert Carter, William Carter and infant sister, Alice Carter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville with Rev. Ed True officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville where military rites will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit. Friends may call Tuesday from 5-8 PM at the funeral funeral home where a service will be held by the Glenford Dugan American Legion Post 229 at 7:30 PM.
