Bernice Alene “Mommy Grandma” Wortman, 92, of Chillicothe, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2020, at her residence. She was born July 22, 1928, in Vinton County, daughter of the late John Vincent and Daisy Dean Napper Boyer. Bernice was married for 74 years to the late Harold F. Wortman, who passed away on April 6, 2004.
She was a retired schoolteacher from Vinton County Schools and earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio University in Athens. Bernice was a life member of Sereno Chapter #128 OES in McArthur, she was a member of and sang for the Ladies Oriental Shrine in Columbus and was a 25-year representative and former chairperson of the Vinton County Republican Party. Bernice was a member of the Hamden United Methodist Church where she sang in their choir and was also a member of Harvey Memorial Community Church in Bradenton, Florida.
Bernice is survived by her daughter, Cheryl K. (Jim) McCloy of Chillicothe; grandchildren, Kathryn (Jake) Thomas of Reynoldsburg, Kristin L. McCloy of Chillicothe, and Kelley A. (Brandon) Martin, M.D., of Gainesville, Florida and two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Rosemary.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Bona L. Wortman and ten brothers and sisters.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, September 26, 2020, in Hamden Cemetery, Hamden. No calling hours will be observed.
Arrangements are by Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur.
