Betty J. Mabe

Betty J. (Brooks) Mabe, 88, of Chillicothe, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2021, at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.  Betty was born on July 14, 1932, in Zaleski, to the late Bundy and Bernice M. (Rhoades) Brooks.

She was a graduate of Brown-Zaleski High School, class of 1950 and then worked for the Columbus and Southern Electric Company until her marriage on December 3, 1955, to the late Wheeler Russel “Russ” Mabe, of Bristol, Virginia, who was serving in the United States Air Force.  They lived many places in the United States and one tour of three in Japan.  Upon his retirement, they came to Chillicothe, where they worked twenty years with the United States Postal Service.

In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by three special cousins, L.E. Eddie Bartoe, Charles M. Harkless and Brenda Sue Wolfe.  They were more like brothers and sister to Betty.

She is survived by many cousins, including Michael Harkless of Wheelersburg, Theresa and Earl Vaughn of Hopewell, Virginia and Michael “Levi” Harkless of Wheelersburg and many other nieces and nephews.

Betty was a member of the Zaleski United Methodist Church and the Sereno Chapter #128 OES in McArthur and attended Andersonville United Methodist Church in Chillicothe.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Friday, April 16, 2021, in the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur, with Rev. Richard Thomas officiating.  Interment will be in Elk Cemetery, McArthur.  Friends may call on Friday, from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
