Denver R. Conkel, 80, a long time resident of Buchtel, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at O’Bleness Hospital in Athens. He was born November 13, 1942, in West Hamlin, West Virginia, the son of the late James W. and Mamie (Hollander) Conkel. Denver was married for 56 years to Brenda D. (Calvert) Conkel who survives.
Denver loved his Lord Jesus Christ, family, and he liked watching the sunrise, sunset, hearing the birds of nature sing, working in the garden, and he appreciated the beauty of the hills that surround Buchtel. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a retired insurance agent for Western & Southern Life Insurance, and he also worked for the Hocking Valley Community Residential Center. He was a member of the Athens Seventh Day Adventist Church.
In addition to his wife, Brenda, Denver is survived by his daughter, Kim D. Sufronko of Buchtel; son, Kelby R. (Jamie) Conkel of Lancaster; also three “Great Blessings”, his grandchildren, Brandon M. Sufronko, Samuel D. Conkel, and Maggie G. Conkel, who were such a joy to be around and he loved very much.
Denver was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Paul Sufronko; and faithful friend and Army Buddy, James F. Raynor.
Denver will be cremated and a private graveside burial will be held at Whitmore Cemetery in Buchtel, at a later date, with Military Honors conducted by the Combined Color Guard. Arrangements are by Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville.
