Derek Joseph Johnson

Derek Joseph Johnson, 39, of Athens, passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2022.  Derek was born on May 22, 1982, in Athens, the son of Ginger (John) Hitchings Edwards of Athens and Christopher Johnson of Logan.

Derek found great peace being in the outdoors.  He never missed a chance to hunt and he loved to fish as well.  Derek loved football, especially the Dallas Cowboys and he enjoyed following the career of Joe Burrow from high school to the NFL.

In addition to his parents, Derek is survived by aunts and uncles, Jack (Maja) Hitchings of Hampton, Virginia, Tina (Brad Harter) Romine of Athens, Brenda (Gary) Malone of Logan, Kevin (Barb) Johnson of Nelsonville, Denise (Shawn) Coon of Logan, J.R. (Wendy) Johnson of Nelsonville, and Sis Johnson of Nelsonville; grandmothers, Virginia Newlun of Nelsonville and Leora Johnson of Logan; and special great aunt and uncle, Sue and Roger Parker of Pleasantville.

Derek was preceded in death by his brother, Ryan Johnson; grandparents, Jack Hitchings, Donna (Frank) Lopez, Waveline Johnson, and Woodruff Johnson; and aunts and uncles, Marina Winterbotham, Terrie Hitchings, and Kenny Johnson.

A service of remembrance will be held at 1:30 PM on Sunday, April 24, 2022, in the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville.  Friends and family may visit from 12:30 to 1:30 PM Sunday at the funeral home.  Masks are not required but kindly appreciated.

The family suggests donations be made to the funeral home to assist with funeral expenses.
