Donald Gene Shirkey

Donald Gene Shirkey, 74, of McArthur, passed away surrounded by the love of his family, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Adena Regional Medical Center, Chillicothe. Don was born on August 13, 1950, in Lockbourne, Ohio, the son of the late Cecil and Esther (Wolfe) Shirkey. He was married to Joy (Hutchison) Shirkey who survives.

Don retired from M.G. Abbott Electric where he was a commercial electrician for many years. Don was an avid hunter and he took great pride in his home and hunting cabin. Don was a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was always there to lend a hand to anyone, he spoke his mind, and he never cut corners, “don’t do it halfway” he would say. Don was also a collector of all things antique.

Don is survived by his wife, Joy; son, Brian (Jaymie) Shirkey of Ashville; stepson, Jacob (Ashley) Thompson of Dundas; grandchildren, Griffin Shirkey, Carson Shirkey, and Riley Thompson; brothers, Jim Shirkey, Ronald Shirkey, Clinton Shirkey, Richard Shirkey, and Louie Shirkey; sisters, Diane Lester, Betty Jane Logan, Dora Goodling, and Kathy McClellan; and special friends, Gene and Carol Hayes.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Cecil Conrad Shirkey; sister, Leona Bailey; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201W. High St, McArthur, with Pastor Ronald Goodling officiating. Interment will be in Garrett Ridge Cemetery, McArthur. Family and friends may visit from 10 am to 1 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
