Evelyn Marie Bourne Howdyshell, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, May 4, 2020 at her home, surrounded by her family. Evelyn was born on August 28, 1928 at the foot of the mountain near Burkes Garden, Virginia. She was the oldest child of the late Earl Bourne, Sr. and Edith Repass Bourne. When Evelyn was 13 years old, her family moved from Virginia to a farm in Perry County, Ohio. It was there that she would meet the young man who lived on the neighboring farm, Loren Woodrow Howdyshell. Loren “Shorty” and Evelyn were married on May 25, 1946 in Reed City, Michigan. They were constant companions until Loren’s passing on May 10, 2013.
Evelyn spent 9 years as a cook for the Maxville school until it closed. She was a homemaker, church youth advisor, 4-H advisor, band camp chaperone, church treasurer, a member of the Women’s Missionary Society, and Sunday school teacher. She and Loren were faithful members of Ebenezer Baptist Church and they adored their church family.
Evelyn loved plants and had an incredible green thumb. Her house and yard were always abounding with various plants and flowers.
Evelyn is survived by her son, Emery (Jane Morgan) Howdyshell, daughter Karen (Charles) Westenbarger, grandchildren Beth (Jim) Martin, Phil (Shawna) Westenbarger, Heather (Greg) Dickerson, great-grandchildren Jeremiah Martin, Emrie Dickerson, Ryanne Westenbarger, Henry Dickerson, Greta Dickerson, PJ Westenbarger, Norah Dickerson, Clara Dickerson, and many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Sharen Mount, great-grandson Isaac Martin, and her siblings, Earl Bourne, Jr., Vernon Bourne, Dorothy Mohler, William Bourne, Jerry Bourne, and Gladys Mayberry.
Evelyn will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but we know that she is perfectly well in Heaven, celebrating many glorious reunions with loved ones.
