Frederick "Fred" Burtis Bakies

Frederick (Fred) Burtis Bakies peacefully passed away at his home on Friday, January 20, 2023.

Fred was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and a loyal friend to all who knew him. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Krista, her husband Steve, and their two daughters Mena and Sage, his wife Debbie and her children and grandchildren, his sisters Frances “Fanny” (David) Walton, Carol Walton, Tanya (Richard) Woodrum, Juanita (John) Schettler, Edith “Bunny” Bakies-Joseph, his brother Thomas (Carolyn) Bakies, and his many friends and colleagues.

Fred was predeceased by his beloved father and mother, Francis and Dana Bakies, brother John and sisters, Valerie and Susan.

Fred was born in Adrian, Ohio and grew up in Sycamore, Ohio. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Airforce where he served his country with 4 years of active service and 26 years with the Air Force reserve and Air National Guard. Fred lived most of his life in Ohio. He was an avid naturalist and passionate motorist and mechanic. He enjoyed time on his forested property in Vinton County Hills and in his garage, where he would repair and rebuild classic cars. Fred had a kind spirit and a warm sense of humor. He was both humble and unassuming, while always being a steady beacon of support and guidance to those whom he loved, and who loved him dearly in return. He will be sorely missed.

His family would like to express their deep appreciation for the support provided by the heartland hospice care facility in Jackson, Ohio, and they encourage individuals to pay respects to Fred’s memory through contributions in his name to the National Parks Foundation and the Arbor Society.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.  Arrangements are by Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur.
