John Raymond “Jack” Nichols, 86, of Millfield, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at The Laurels of Athens. He was born June 7, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late Marjorie (Canfield) and Lester Nichols. He was married on October 9, 1955, to Ruth Arlene (Carey) Nichols, who survives.
Jack was a 1955 graduate of Townsend-Wakeman High School in Huron County, Ohio. He worked as a bricklayer and construction superintendent, VP of Operations at Riverside Hospital in Toledo, and VP of Operations at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Florida.
Jack was a 2-year veteran of the Wakeman, Ohio Police Department as a volunteer officer, a 27-year veteran of the Huron County Sheriffs Dept. where he served as a Special Deputy, concluding his career as a Captain. He served 4 years as a board member for Western Reserve Schools in Huron County.
Jack also was an avid baseball and softball player, golfer, bowler, and pilot.
Jack is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth and their dog, Misty; sons, John (Sarah) Nichols of Millfield, Ohio, Tom (Mary Tillman) Nichols of Toledo, Ohio, and Terry (Amy) Nichols of Georgetown, Kentucky; grandchildren, Melissa (Craig) Bostater, Melinda Nichols, Travis (Nikki) Nichols, Monica (Mark Patton) Humphrey, Charles Humphrey III, Kyle Nichols, Nicole (Ricci) Magsino, Derek (Ashley) Nichols, Max Nichols, Megan Nichols, and Bryan (Mary) Nichols; 22 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; special cousin, Cheryl (John) Nolan; and many in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, and many friends from all over the country.
Jack was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie in 1974; father, Lester in 1992; and brother, Ronnie in 2002.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville. Family and friends may visit 1 hour prior to the service on Saturday.
To keep with Jack’s giving nature, the family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association.
