Johnnie H. McManis, age 84, passed away October 22, 2018 at Adena Regional Medical Center, Palliative Care Unit, surrounded by his loving children. He was born on April 9, 1934 in Dundas, Ohio, son of the late John S. and Mary C. (Boyer) McManis. Johnnie was married to the late Anna L. (Graves) McManis, who predeceased him.
Johnnie graduated from McArthur High School in 1952, retired from the B&O Railroad, was a Thirty-Second Degree Mason, past Master of Mineral Lodge #259 F&AM in Hamden and was a current member of Delta Lodge #207 F&AM in McArthur. He loved his family very much and liked spending time with them, his door was always open for visiting. Johnnie enjoyed fishing, especially on his pontoon boat, giving rides on his gator, reading, listening to old records and taking drives around Vinton County reminiscing of the past. When he was younger, he liked to work in hay fields, gardens and “tinker” on cars, trucks and tractors in his garage.
He is survived by his children, Kathy (Mike) Sowers, Kristine (Rick) Graves and Paul McManis, all of McArthur and Bruce (Cindy) McManis of Hamden; grandchildren, Matthew Sowers, Stephen (Libby) Graves, Elizabeth (Adam) Grubb, Johnathon (Tiffany) McManis, Rebeca McManis, Michael Paul McManis, Jacob McManis and Allie (Fiancé, Shawn Murray) Arms. Johnnie had eight great-grandchildren who he liked to “spoil” and had a special love for and them. Sisters, Nancy Couch, Della Humbarger, Goldie Hammond and Maude Pendleton, along with numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. Also surviving are two long time companions, Jack the miniature donkey and Buddy, his blind horse.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his wife; parents; daughter-in-law, Rhonda D. McManis; brothers, Pearl McManis, Sherman McManis and James McManis and a sister, Mary Jane McManis.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, October 27, 2018 in the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur, with Pastor Ron Baxter officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., where a Masonic service will be held prior to starting the funeral service at 1 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of Johnnie H. McManis to Ohio Health, Arthur G.H. Bing M.D. Cancer Center, 500 Thomas Lane, Columbus, Ohio 43214.
