Leo Isaiah Amore, 97 of McArthur, Ohio passed away at Summer Breeze Senior Living, Savannah, Georgia on September 23, 2021. This is where he resided for the last 5 years.

He was born on June 17, 1924, in Coshocton, Ohio, the son of the late Thurman Leroy and Harriett Mamie (Rivers) Amore. Leo was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Jeneva Christine Amore, 7 sisters, Ethel Angle, Lily Green, Annie Moore, Sophia Donley, Mary Maple, Lawanda Capple, Isabelle Simmons; five brothers, Wesley, Thurman, Virgil, Arthur and Everett Amore and a daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Amore.

Leo grew up in Ohio and was a talented multi-sport athlete. His high school football coach was Woody Hayes, who was just beginning his legendary career. "Tough and demanding" is how Leo remembers his coach, who went on to Ohio State University fame.

He joined the Navy in November 1942. Being only 17 at the time, he got his father to sign his enlistment papers. He served on three Liberty ships. First was the SS Zebulon Pike as part of the five-inch, .38-caliber gun crew. The second was the SS Williamsburg which was involved in the European/ African/Middle Eastern campaign, and his final assignment was the White Bird Canyon, a Liberty ship tanker in the Pacific where he was promoted to gunner's mate third class and gun crew chief. In October 1945 he received an honorable discharge and was awarded several metals including a Bronze Star.

Leo worked for North American Aviation Corporation and General Motors Corporation in Columbus, Ohio as a Tool and Die Maker/Designer.

After retirement he served as Chairman and Board Member of the Vinton County Board of Elections in McArthur, Ohio for 16 years.

Leo is survived by his son, Ronald (Judy) Amore of Washington Court House, Ohio and daughter, Beverly (Richard) Long of Savannah, Georgia; 3 grandchildren, Ronald Amore, Jr. (Diane), Teresa Havens (Ernie), and Jessica Long; 6 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Thursday, September 30, 2021, in the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur, with Pastor Mike Henry officiating.  Interment will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Vinton County, with military graveside services being conducted by the McArthur VFW Post #5299.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, one hour prior to the service.
