Leonard “Perky” Perkins Sr., 92, of New Plymouth, passed away Friday, August 23, 2024, at his residence. He was born April 19, 1932, in Pattonsville, Ohio, son of the late Rozelle F. (Willard) Gee Thacker and Bain Perkins. Perky was married to the late Helen Marie McClaskey Perkins.
He was a retired coal miner and a United States Navy Veteran of the Korean War. Perky was a member of the McArthur Eagles, McArthur VFW, Albany VFW and the Wellston American Legion. He enjoyed watching line dancing, old cars, doing puzzles and attending local events.
Perky is survived by his son, Leonard Emmett Perkins Jr. of Florida; daughters, Deborah (Rich Walker) Perkins of Florida, Teresa (Everett) Stevens of Florida, Sandra Perkins of New Plymouth, Brenda (Kenneth) Butcher of Jackson and Lisa (Mark) Bentley of Creola; ten grandchildren; several great grandchildren; a brother, Rick (Lila) Thacker of Wellston and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Perky was preceded in death by his daughter, Betty Jane Graves; longtime companion, Betty Jo Prater; brother, Eugene Thacker and sisters, Shirley Strawser and Carolyn Boyer.
A graveside service will be held 10 a.m., Friday, September 6, 2024, in Hamden Cemetery, Hamden, Ohio. Military services will be conducted by the Albany VFW Post #9893.
Arrangements are by Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur.
