Melvin Gene Patterson, 82, of McArthur, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at the Kobacker House in Columbus. He was born March 11, 1935 in Byer, Ohio, son of the late Rev. Raymond Carl and Pauline Remy Patterson. Melvin was married for 62 years to Blanche Elaine Barnett Patterson, who survives.
He was a self made businessman who founded Patterson and Son Logging and Chipping and Cross Creek General Store, home of the 5 cent cup of coffee. Melvin was an Army Veteran and a member of the Delta Lodge #207 F&AM in McArthur. He was an exceptional softball pitcher and founder of the Vinton County Horse Show Club.
Melvin is survived by his son, Michael Eugene (Beth Ann) Patterson of McArthur; daughter, Michelle Elaine (Charles) Hamlin of McArthur; grandchildren, Joshua Michael (Amanda) Patterson, Jessica Elaine (Aaron) Walters, Tiffany Nicole (Michael) Barker and Daniel Melvin (Kaitlyn) Caudill and great grandchildren, Ava and Cayden Patterson, Lauren, Sydney and Elin Walters and Hudson Barker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Marvin Jack Patterson.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, September 9, 2017 in the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur, with Pastor Jim Vandagriff and Pastor Wes Gallaugher officiating. Interment will be in Bell Cemetery, Vinton County, with military graveside services being conducted by the McArthur VFW Post #5299. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 4-8 p.m.
