Paul E. Smathers

Paul E. Smathers, 79, of Nelsonville, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024, at the Pickering House in Lancaster.  He was born August 28, 1944, in Athens, the son of the late Carl and Garnet (Reynolds) Smathers. He was married to the late Diana (Thomas) Smathers.

Paul retired from Logan Hocking Schools. He enjoyed driving a bus to transport canoers, kayakers, and tubers for Murray’s Landing in Nelsonville.  Paul loved Jeeps, dirt track racing, and demolition derbies.  And he always there for anyone; family, friends, and strangers.

Paul is survived by his sons, John Smathers of Columbus and Joel Smathers of Columbus; grandchildren, Nicole, Tia, Katie, Chaz, Sarah, and Tyler; 5 great grandchildren; siblings, Jeff (Maryann) Smathers of The Plains, Shirley Whalen of Carbon Hill, Mike (Tammy) Thomas of Sugar Grove, and Howard & Carol Dane Meeks of Carbon Hill; and special friends, Gary and Jenny Carsey, Ed “Doc” Simms, and Jeanie Curtis.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson, JC Daubenmire; and daughter, Paula Hummel.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield.  Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St, Nelsonville.

The family suggests donations in memory of Paul be made to FairHoPe Hospice, 282 Sells Rd, Lancaster, Ohio 43130.
