Pauline Frances Burson, age 98, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at her home in Sun City Center, Florida. She was a longtime resident of McArthur, Ohio, until 1995 when she and her late husband, Herbert Burson spent winters in Florida and summers in Ohio. After his passing in 2013, she became a full-time Florida resident in 2016.
Born near Amesville, Ohio on September 28,1926, she was the only daughter of the late Wyatt and Nelle Evans McDaniel.
Mrs. Burson was a retired music teacher of 30 years in the Vinton County Public Schools. She was a graduate of Ames-Bern High School in 1944 and graduated from Ohio University in 1949, after having taught music for one year (1947-48) at East Liverpool, Ohio.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in McArthur, Elizabethans Women’s Association, and organist for more than forty years. She was also a member of the Ohio Education Association (OEA), the National Association of Music Education, the National Education Association (NEA), Vinton County Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma Professional Honorary Society of women educators, and Handbell Choir player in the church. She also belonged to the Athens and Vinton County Historical Societies.
In Sun City Center, Florida, she was an associate member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Circle II, Bible Study Class, Lapidary Club, and Handbell Ringer for 14 years. The latter which she greatly enjoyed and made many friends while making music together. Over the last several years, Pauline and her daughter Diana would play piano duets at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church to the delight of the congregation.
She married Herbert Shields Burson on May 30, 1949. They were married for nearly 65 years.
She is survived by her son, Ronald (Nancy) Burson of Seneca, South Carolina, daughter, Diana (Gene) Haman Paul of Dayton, Ohio and son, John Burson of McMinnville, Tennessee. Pauline was the proud grandmother of Gregory (Sierra) Haman of Nokomis, Florida; Krista (Ben) Zemanek of Kettering, Ohio; Sarah (Will Kent) Haman of Englewood, Ohio and Andrew (Keri) Burson of Pickerington, Ohio. She also has two precious great-grandsons: Alexander Haman and Nicolas Haman of Nokomis, Florida. She has ten nieces and nephews as well as numerous friends in Vinton County and Florida.
Mrs. Burson was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Matthew Burson, who unexpectedly passed away in 2012; brother, Wyatt “Mac” McDaniel Jr. and son-in-law, Robert J. Haman Jr.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, April 6, 2025, in the McArthur Presbyterian Church, 109, N. Boundary Ave., McArthur, with Rev. Jim Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Elk Cemetery, McArthur. Visitation will be held at the church on Sunday, from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
