Ruth Arlene (Carey) Nichols, 87, of Millfield, Ohio, passed away on Monday, September 23, 2024, at The Laurels of Athens. She was born on April 6, 1937, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to the late Clarence and Arthuretta (Taulker) Carey. She was married to the Love of her life, the late John “Jack” Nichols, on October 9, 1955.
Ruth was a 1955 graduate of Townsend – Wakeman High School in Huron County, Ohio. She retired from St. Lukes Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.
Ruth was very active with her sons through the years serving as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and supported them while they were active in Boy Scouts. Ruth also served in several capacities on the Western Reserve Schools PTO / PTA organizations, where she was a past president. Ruth was an avid collector of turtles and light houses; and loved vacationing with her children and grand children through the years.
Ruth is survived by her sons, John (Sarah) Nichols of Millfield, Ohio, Tom (Mary Tillman) Nichols of Toledo, Ohio, and Terry Nichols of Georgetown, Kentucky; grandchildren, Melissa (Craig) Bostater, Melinda Nichols, Travis (Nikki) Nichols, Monica (Mark Patton) Humphrey, Charles Humphrey III, Kyle Nichols, Nicole (Ricci) Magsino, Derek (Ashley) Nichols, Max Nichols, Megan Nichols, and Bryan (Mary) Nichols; 22 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; special cousin, Cheryl (John) Nolan; siblings, Barb Stentz, Phyllis (Jim) Brown, and Margaret (Bob) Graves; sister-in-law, Martha Carey; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends from all over the country.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, John “Jack” Nichols in 2023; her daughter-in-law, Amy Nichols in 2024; brother, Ronald Carey in 2020; and six half-siblings.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville. Family and friends may visit 1 hour prior to the service on Saturday.
To keep with Ruth’s giving nature, the family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association.
