Wanetta M. Nelson, 83, of Hamden, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2018 at her residence. She was born December 9, 1935 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, daughter of the late Henry Syrus and Rosa Elizabeth Nay Riffle. Wanetta was married for 50 years to the late William Allen “Bill” Nelson, who passed away in 2004.
She retired as an aide from Huston’s Nursing Home in Hamden and was a member of Ladies Auxiliary Aerie No. 2279 F.O.E. in McArthur. Wanetta was raised Baptist and revolved her life around her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved Christmas and Holidays with her family and will be missed by all who knew her.
Wanetta is survived by her children, Judy (Glen Hale) of Vinton County, Barbara (Joe) Brown of Albany, Brenda (Bruce) Prater of Hamden and John Nelson of Vinton County; thirteen grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mary Barnett, Pat Nelson and Wanda Nelson and many nieces, nephews and special friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son; granddaughter, Bridget Prater; great grandson, Zane Clevinger; thirteen brothers and sisters and father and mother-in-law, John and Helen Nelson.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 2, 2019 in the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur, with Pastor Danny Minton officiating. Interment will be in Elk Cemetery, McArthur. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 11 a.m., until the time of the service.
